Zandra Rhodes at the AIU Fashion Showcase

This week I was invited along to the AIU London Fashion Design & Marketing Showcase, held in the world famous, iconic Truman Brewery on Brick Lane. A review of the show will be published shortly so keep your eyes peeled for my stars of the show then. This brief blog post however focuses on the fact I got to meet Zandra Rhodes, the iconic British fashion designer, at the event - I was utterly starstruck, she is one of my absolute favourites!

Dressed to the nines in her pink hair, and purple and gold two piece suit, meeting such an icon was an honour and I'm really glad she took the time to take a photograph with me. Zandra was handing out accolades to the winners at the event, which I'm sure they were all pleased about given they received their prizes from one the of the Greats of the British Fashion Industry.

Here I am looking sweaty with this amazing lady below...

Review will be published over the weekend so keep your eyes out for this, I've some exciting new talent to preach to you all about!

Also, please follow me on Twitter if you're on there - you can find daily updates of my fashion views and fashion happenings in London and Scotland. You can find me on @EmmaMartinRed.

Glamour Awards 2012

Last night was the Glamour Awards in London, which always proves to be one of my favourite UK fashion events of the year. Glamour is one of the best womens fashion and lifestyle magazine on the market at the moment therefore they always tend to get good celebs dolled up to the nines at their annual awards show. Special mention must go to Paloma Faith in the embellished tassled Silvia Tattoo Gown by Temperley London accompanied with Erickson Beamon earrings. One of my fashion icons - I love everything this lady wears. Silver is a key trend this year, and even better if you mix your metallics infusing a bit of gold in there and heck, throw in some tassels for good measure...

However my ultimate FAVOURITE thing at the awards was X Factor winners Little Mix in Scottish designer Hayley Scanlan's designs. Having worked with and promoted Hayley over the years, I have loved her work since she graduated from Dundee art school Duncan of Jordanstone and as you can see from previous posts, really back her as potentially the next Holly Fulton.

The way in which she has diffused the main Hayley Scanlan line into an already successful sister label (whilst having newborn twins might I add) is really credible, and shows the sheer determination and talent this Scots designer has. Little Mix's Jesy and Leigh-ann are perfect models for this collection and no doubt we will see high street-alikes this summer....

Second and fourth from left - Hayley Scanlan

Hayley is nominated for Scottish Young Designer of the Year awards at the Scottish Fashion Awards 2012, see the full list of nominees here - http://www.scottishfashionawards.com/press/Nominees2012.pdf.

You can also contact Hayley for commissions via her website here - http://hayleyscanlan.blogspot.co.uk/

Now let's get our Hayley Scanlan on by donning neon, stripes and Swarovski this summer!

Scottish Furniture & Interiors Exhibition at Clerkenwell Design Week

Last Tuesday, I was invited along to the Scottish Furniture & Interiors Exhibition at Clerkenwell Design Week, set in the House of Detention, in Clerkenwell, central London. It has been hard to not know that this exciting week was on, due to the neon pink advertisements adorned throughout London, and what a great showcase the Scottish Furniture & Interior Design team put on.

Having long been a firm supporter of Scottish talent and design, even I have to admit that furniture is often overlooked in favour of textiles and jewellery. However, the Clerkenwell and Farringdon area wholeheartedly supports furniture design and innovation, making it the ideal setting for Scottish designers to exhibit their wares in. With design stores and boutique interior stores a-plenty, this pocket of London seeps out with creativity and talent, making it the ultimate 'go to' destination for those looking to infuse their homes with latest interior styles and trends.

The Scottish Furniture & Interiors was set in the atmospheric House of Detention, a supposedly haunted catacomb under Clerkenwell grounds built in 1617. Once a prison, the location is now used amongst local creative types in the art and film industry, making it the perfect 'cubby hole' to showcase Scotland's interior design talent.

Dazzling colours, textiles and mediums set against the grey stone of this old building created a very atmospheric showcase, with finishing touches including Irvine Welsh novels, Irn Bru and Tunnock's Tea Cakes. The showcase featured works by an array of Scottish based designers which included textile brands Timorous Beasties, Harris Tweed, Turnberry Rug Works, Calzeat, Bespoke Atelier and Begg Scotland and furniture makers such as METHOD Furniture, John Galvin Design and Daniel Lacey.

The sheer amount of innovation in the pieces on display was clear to the naked eye, and reinforced Textiles Scotland message of Scotland being a world leader of creative talent. Arguably, Scotland has produced the greats including Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Gillespie & Scott, and fashion designers Louise Gray - who has recently announced a collaboration with Topshop, Holly Fulton, Christopher Kane and Jonathan Saunders, which serves to justify Textiles Scotlands message.

Notable favourites at the showcase included Turnberry Rug Works recycled red cashmere rug, made from the excess material produced by Johnstons of Elgin (20 tonnes of the stuff!). Eco friendly and aestheically pleasing, the rug on closer inspection had an array of yellows, blacks, blue and oranges, made all the more intriguing by the story of how it came to be. METHOD Furniture's concept of reworking the age old 'travellers suitcase' into a modern case for 21st Century textile designers really grabbed my attention.  I also particularly enjoyed METHOD Furniture's tattooist designed and illustrator scribed cubes, which would make for the perfect addition to young, hipster-esque apartments from Glasgow's West End to London's Hoxton Square. With interest from designer stores in China, this is one Scottish designer to watch.

Mention must also go to Glasgow based textile designer Bespoke Atelier's hanging wall frame, reworked on printed wood. Featuring an aerial view of Glasgow's rooftops, the witty use of combining textiles and furniture with our beloved Glasgow was a really clever and wonderful piece of artistry.

Here's selection of photographs from the showcase:

Fashionable Beehive-iour

Hi all,

Brief blog post today - did any of you see this picture of Nicole Richie at last night's FiFi Awards in New York?? WOW. From her mullet vintage-esque black dress, classic black heels, amazing make-up and WOW hair this has to be one my personal favourite Nicole Richie looks. The beehive is an uber trend this year. Seemingly taking inspiration from Ab Fab's Patsy Stone, Nicole turn this iconic style modern with her honey hues and quirky pleat at the front. To refer to an earlier blog post, she is also donning 2012s obligatory hoop earrings, the perfect finish for this ultimate 'do.

This is one look I will definitely be rocking this summer...

Off to enjoy Clerkenwell Design Week tonight - blog post to follow. Have a great day!

Bling-a-ling

I simply LOVE big earrings!

This infatuation began in the most unlikeliest of places at a very young age. Yes, that's right, Pat from Eastenders and her giant baubles. They pulled me in like a light to a moth, the array of beading, sequins, flitter, metals and jewels being a wonderous place to explore. Having collected vintage earrings over the years, I now own three stacked boxes full of the items and am always on the hunt for more at vintage fairs and shops around the UK and on Ebay.

This blog post does indeed relate to modern fashion trends, as recently we have seen a resurgance in the big hoop, 'chav' earrings. I know, as I purchased the hugest, tackiest pair of silver hoops at the weekend for a bargain £1.50 from Primark in Westfield. A staple of the 1980s and 1990s, the hoop earring became popular with many of my fellow school friends, particularly donned with GAP shirts and those flarey horrid skater trousers.

However, it is thanks to celebs like Beyonce, Jessie J and up-and-coming fashion icon Rita Ora, the hoop earring has seen a revival and can be worn nowadays with the most glamorous of evening-wear....

Fusing glamour with that street edge is what these ladies do best and offers ample amounts of inspiration this summer, particularly for those on a budget. The high street takes their cue from the designer twist on this age old style, with the new generation of hoop earrings coming in all shapes and sizes, even fusing gold and silver - a key trend this year and various jewels and ornamentation....

Take inspiration from the SS 2012 catwalk and wear large, dominating hoops in bronze or gunmetal silver with soft chiffons or strong tailoring. Designer styles can be found on the high street, with my particular favourites including the large gold hoops from Primark and a silver and gold bamboo style hoop from Miss Selfridge. Below I am also wearing my new silver hoops last weekend, a bargain £1.50 from Primark. The bold magenta lipstick really set off the metallic hoops well I found too along with my geometric print dress and gothic bangles...

RetroSpec

This is a post that offers promise. That there IS sun coming, and that it is not all impending doom and gloom. What finer way to express that then a blog about SUNGLASSES. The topping of that stylish cake, sunglasses have the ability to make or break an outfit and something I uncover a burning passion every May. It was this photograph of Elle (sister of Dakota) Fanning in these amazeballs sunglasses that provoked me into looking at the hottest sunglasses out there for summer 2012. Despite only being 14, I am very envious of this girl's style, a mere decade younger than myself...

I LOVE these. Adorned with minute daises, these fifties cats eye style shades are the perfect addition to this year's 70s chic trend. So what does the high street offer in the way of amazing sunglasses, the perfect anti-tode to the current awful weather?

ASOS for me do the best sunglasses. Cost effective and stylish, their range - particularly this year - offer you choice and flexibility, in terms of your style and face shape. My particular favourites include the Round Interchangeable Lens Sunglasses, which you can buy for a bargainous £18, the traditional Cat Eye Sunglasses with Contrast Highbrow for a total steal at £12 and the futuristic, very sleek Flat Top Round Sunglasses, for £15 - I would recommend a very monochromatic, styled down outfit with these as these really do stand out and are a bit 'Katy Perry'...

Another ye olde favourite sunglasses destination of mines in Jeepers Peepers. Offering a range of vintage inspired sunglasses, they are the perfect accompaniment to any summer outfit, and heck, even go with your Monday to Thursday corporate wear. These also look great with the current Mad Men outfits on the high street at the moment, and are a good investment piece. Their traditional cats eye sunglasses range evokes age old glamour whilst protecting your blinkers from the sun, which can only ever be a good thing. They remind me of my nan at the beach in the 60s with her matching flared dress and white sandals. My ULTIMATE favourite from Jeepers Peepers and which I will be purchasing for London Summer Fun Times, is the 'KITTEN' Leopard Very feline Cat Eye, which retails for £22. Due to copyright I can't blog an image, however find a hyperlink to these amazeballs sunglasses above.

So what sunglasses will you be donning this summer? Think I may stick to my age old favourite cats eyes, however fancy pushing the boat out and amping up my range this year....

Happy Sunglasses Shopping!

Metallics, metallics everywhere!

Happy Tuesday folks,

Last night was the Met Gala awards in New York, and my goodness there was an array of the most wonderful outfits. Metallics and berry lips seemed to be the rule of thumb, with many stars including Emma Stone donning neon pink - see yesterday's post to see how best to adopt the neon trend.

I love anything metallic, and like a magpie am drawn to anything which evokes glitz and gold. My personal favourites were Carey Mulligan in an ombre-esque silver and gold fishtail disc Prada number and Lana Del Rey in a Joseph Altuzarra gold dress with black cape - another fashion fancy of mines....

I will now be fishing out my vintage cape from under the bed to don with a new metallic number. WOWZAS.

NEON, NEON, NEON

Happy May Day!

Hope you've all had a great Bank Holiday weekend. I've spent the weekend researching new designers and reading an obscene amount of fashion magazines, and of course, drinking vino. As any of you Fashionistas out there will know, NEON is set to dominate this Spring/Summer. From our nails to our dresses, to our heels to our clutches, it will be colour pop a go-go this summer.

However, as many of you will know neon is an extremely tricky trend to pull off (not referring to my Nue Rave attempts back in 2006 at the ripe old age of 18 - disaster in a neon Henry Holland t-shirt.) There are in my opinion, two ways to wear neon. The first is to either go all out and colour block it, ie. a bold fuschia or lime green dress with minimal/nude accessories or add certain neon elements to an otherwise monochromatic, muted colour palatte.

One celebrity who really pulls off and illustrates the neon trend with aplomb is Kourtney Kardashian, a personal favourite of mines. She articulates this trend through the medium of her high heels and accessories (note, the chunky necklace is another key SS 2012 trend). This is a great way to reference this trend if you're not feeling bold or tend to be quite frightened of donning bright, bold colours...

Should you wish to wear the trend at the other end of the scale, take note from Solange Knowles. This girl has style and really knows how to rock a bold look. Combining neon shoes, with neon infused patterns takes a bold soul however with very minimal make-up and toned down accessories this look can really work...

I have loved neon for years and have worn it sporadically over the past eight years. I reckon this stems from trawling in charity shops and finding neon pink or lime Jaeger jackets for a bargainous 50 pence. Here's me rocking the neon trend over the past few years....

2007! Neon bustier, neon pink clutch. A mish mash of charity shop clothes.

2008! Vintage neon yellow jacket, worn with black jumpsuit. Seems like I wore this outfit to match the Berlin Wall.

2010! Colour pop with my vintage neon green clip in earrings.

2011! Handmade neon floral belt, with colour pop shoes and vintage 'Seniorita' dress.

2012! Black leather dress with vintage colour pop neon jacket from Beyond Retro on Brick Lane.

2011! Away to work a PR do in vintage black prom dress, poppy red stilletos and charity shop  Jaeger jacket - 50 pence! Good old Salvation Army.

2012! Vintage neon lime jacket, white flares and leopard monochrome bustier. Note, the gold chunky jewellery to accompany the gold buttons on the jacket. This will be worn with every outfit this summer!

I have a feeling my passion for the neon trend won't fade anytime soon and I hope to see all of you out there donning it this summer!!!

What constitutes a 'style icon'...

A divisive debate has been raging on in this week's press. No, it is not who will be the next London Mayor, Boris or Ken. Nor what better use the Olympic money would have been better spent on. No. It is why the archetypal 'Scouse' look has been banned at Liverpool Fashion Week and what impact that has on the city's Fashion Week and in turn, reputation.

Admittedly, what is not one girl's overgrown, bushy eyebrow is another's beloved 'Scousebrow'. It is when the two worlds collide, as seen on Kate Middleton adopting the aforementioned 'brow that leads us to question - just was constitutes a style icon and who are we, or the media, to judge what is or isn't true style?

Since the inception of WAG culture, it has become so ingrained in us that we no longer look in shock at the girls walking down the street with four sets of false eyelashes, fake tan and short dresses. Rather, we accept it. I for one don't tend to dress that but on the other hand, part of me likes seeing girls making an effort with their appearance and donning those 6 inch heels to go dancing in.
Amanda Moss, founder of Liverpool Fashion Week, banning  the 'scouse' look at this year's Liverpool Fashion Week, is something I completely disagree with. This is a look which women throughout the city love and adopt on a daily basis, with icons including Abigail Clancy and Coleen Rooney. It might not be to everyones taste, yet this is a look that many women like, some of my friends included. So who are we and Amanda Moss to judge what is 'style' what isn't? This to me reeks of fashion snobbery. I hope they turn this argument around and embrace what Liverpool is about soon. Like I said what is one women's bushy eyebrow is another's scousebrow....

And on a final note, I do actually LOVE this dress Scouse native and glamourpuss Amanda Harrington is weaing, albeit I would probably wear it with my alabaster skin and gold gangster jewellery. But hey, that is was so exciting about fashion!

How to tackle those tricky trends

Evening world,

Small bit blog overload at the moment, however want to gush about how much I want/need these leggings in my life.

Australian boutique Black Milk are known world-wide for their innovative printed leggings, and I've had my eye on these galaxy leggings for quite some time....

Taking their cue from the Christopher Kane galaxy collection, I probably wouldn't wear them like the model above, rather mixing it with my boyfriend's oversized shirt and bondage style ankle boots. If you follow my blog, you'll know that I am a massive fan of print and our beady fashion eyes this year will again look to the galaxy trend.

The difficulties posed by this print is by and far large so it can be a bit of a mission when deciding what to style this print with. A key thing to consider is not to go too loud with the rest of your outfit, rather letting the print do the talking. At most a torque necklace but avoid avoid avoid bright, bold colours or (even worse) alternative prints, as the combi print trend tends to only be suitable to florals.

As any avid follower of fashion would know, the sports luxe trend dominated last year's catwalk and in turn, this year's high street. As a curvy girl, this is an extremely tricky trend for me to pull off and I also tend to flock towards garments that adhere to my shape rather than expose those pesky lumps and bumps. However, my housemate Toli with her athletic figure is able to pull off the sports luxe trend with aplomb and recently purchased black cycling shorts from ASOS, for a bargainous £6. These can be worn with a skirt, exposing the lower edge of the shorts for that slight sports luxe reference, or worn with a bralet if you're feeling daring.

There is one final note when choosing to wear the sports luxe/print trend...try your best not to look like this guy, it's not the greatest look!

Happy Thursday people - nearly the weekend and vino time!

Anna Dello Russo for H&M!

Morning all,

Brief post to discuss the announcement that the delectable and amazing Anna Dello Russo is to launch an accessories line with H&M, set for release Thursday 6th October - BEST.NEWS.EVER.

ADR has been a firm favourite of mines over the years, from noticing her amazing style on Facehunter back in the old school days, to her role as Editor of Japanese Vogue. An eclectic style, ADR is a true to life Carrie Bradshaw, mixing up vintage, haute couture and high street. A power bomb of metallics, prints and textiles, she is what I want to look like when I am older and break into fashion industry one day!

Here is a sneak peek of the upcoming collection, I have my eye on the gold and aqua clutch and crown - yes, I have been known to adorn mouse ears on a night out so a crown is a DEFO must, particularly if it's designed by the one and only Anna Dello Russo:

Ultimate Fashpirations

Hi all,

I now have internet in my flat - yes! Expect more blogger updates over the next few months. I went to see Foster the People at Brixton Academy the other night, who were astounding (and really, really fit). Great venue too, slightly reminiscient of Carling Academy in Glasgow, but bigger. London has been raining, raining, raining which makes me want to just stay in. Very much looking forward to the Summer - reckon it will be a scorcher here. I also can't wait to celebrate one whole year in London in July - my, time has flown and the only way is up!

A question I am asked on a frequent basis is who my ultimate fashion icons are, or as I like to call them - Fashpirations. Ever since I was a little girl I have always been drawn to three things in life - red, leopard print and glitter. If you ever find a day with me not adorned in any of these, then something is seriously amiss.

Having studied History of Art at Glasgow University, I have always been heavily influenced by the art world in terms of colour, texture, material and the overall aesthetic 'look' and how this can inflect the way I dress. Never really one to follow the latest trends, I found myself throughout my studies attempting to incorporate specific elements of art into my clothes, particularly from performance art. My ultimate 'art' icons throughout University were Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, Japanese installation and performance artist Yayoi Kusama and American '70s performance and photographer Cindy Shermen. This continues to inspire the way I dress, and the beauty in living in East London is art is never far from my door meaning I always carry a notepad with me ready to jot down outfit ideas as I go about my day in the city.

I've outlined for you readers below who my ultimate icons are, and if you're ever bored and have time you can see from previous posts how I interpret these in my clothes. Enjoy!

The unique and amazing Isabella Blow. McQueen's muse and icon of the world of millinery, Isabella Blow evokes a unique style of clothing unmatched anywhere else (pre Gaga may I add...)

Jessica Rabbit - the ultimate glamour-puss. The day I get married I intend to wear red, all thanks to this total babe.

Corrie's Bet Lynch. Where the leopard print obsession began....

Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. This lady is the reason why I love polka dots so much. I also heartily recommend you visit her exhibition at the Tate here in London. WOW.

Bianca Jagger, of Studio 54 hall of fame. The glitz, glamour and the jumpsuits - how I ususally dress on a night out, yet pales in comparison to this ultimate fashpiration.

What girl born who is in their twenties doesn't love the Olsen twins style? I like to channel Ashley through my work clothes and Mary Kate for my 'down' days. Effortless, chic and amazing. They're also really proving themselves as designers and I love love love their clothing on uber babe and sibling Elizabeth Olsen, a one to watch fashion icon of the 21st Century.

Ab Fab's Patsy Stone. All that needs to be said is I want to look at cool as this when I'm 50...or 60...

Who are your ultimate fashpirations?
